Merricks is a seaside town on the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne, Australia. This picturesque coastal community, just an hour from Melbourne's central business district, holds the memories and inspiration that would eventually become Merricks Kitchen.

Australian Roots

Our founder Sarah spent her childhood weekends and holidays at her family's beloved property in Merricks - affectionately called "Plein Air." Here, amid the rolling hills and ocean breezes, her family raised cattle, cultivated a vegetable garden, built raging bonfires, and spent days together creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Those sun-drenched days included eating just-picked strawberries still warmed by the sun, wading through rockpools to swim in the clear waters of Western Port Bay, and venturing out on bushwalks that yielded tart blackberries and scented gumtree branches. These simple pleasures created a deep connection to real food and natural ingredients.

The Kitchen That Started It All

The heart of Plein Air was its spacious kitchen with an enormous island counter where Sarah's mother created everything from scratch – quince jam, chutney, lumberjack cake, or her famous chicken sandwiches. Food at Plein Air was always packed with flavor and made from local produce – much of it harvested directly from their own vegetable garden.

These early experiences instilled in Sarah a deep appreciation for honest food made with real ingredients and minimal processing. The warmth and nourishment that came from these kitchen creations would later inspire the founding principles of Merricks Kitchen.

From Family Recipe to Premium Brand

Years later in Newport Beach, California, Sarah found herself searching for breakfast options that captured the same wholesome goodness she remembered from her childhood. Unable to find exactly what she wanted, Sarah began experimenting in her own kitchen, creating what would eventually become Brekky Mix.

What started as a simple family recipe evolved over time, with each iteration bringing new improvements and refinements. Friends and family who tried it couldn't get enough, encouraging Sarah to share her creation with a wider audience.

In 2022, Merricks Kitchen officially launched, named after the Australian seaside town that shaped Sarah's philosophy around food. While the company might be based in sunny California, its heart remains in those formative experiences at Plein Air.

The Brekky Mix Journey

Sarah has been perfecting different versions of Brekky Mix for her family for years, carefully selecting ingredients that deliver both exceptional flavor and nutritional benefits. The original recipe evolved to include new discoveries that enhanced both taste and wellness.

Today, Merricks Kitchen offers three distinct varieties of our signature Brekky Mix, each crafted with the same care and attention to quality that began in Sarah's home kitchen. Every package contains a little piece of that Australian seaside inspiration and the belief that breakfast should be both delicious and nourishing.
